We’re rounding out our National Volunteer Week celebration with a spotlight on Louisa Boudreau, a Volunteer Team Leader who’s been helping strengthen recovery in Sacramento for two years.
Louisa first joined The Phoenix as a volunteer in April 2023 and stepped into a team leader role just a few months later. Since then, she’s played a big part in growing a dedicated crew of volunteers and creating spaces that feel welcoming, accessible, and full of connection.
Outside The Phoenix, Louisa works at Pace Fitness CrossFit PFS, where she leads Forever Fit classes designed for older adults and anyone managing injuries, illness, or physical limitations. She holds certifications in CrossFit L1, Gymnastics, Coaching the Aging Athlete, and Scaling, and she’s currently prepping for her Level 2 exam. She’s also led more than 80 “Sober Sunday” events at Pace, offering free, high-quality CrossFit classes that have reached hundreds in the recovery community.
We sat down with Louisa to hear more about what fuels her volunteer journey.
The Phoenix (PHX): Why do you volunteer with the Phoenix?
Louisa Boudreau (LB): The Phoenix is an amazing organization with a mission that I am passionate about. Having been sober for over 21 years, I have always incorporated fitness into my sober journey. It has been a HUGE part of it. When I discovered the Phoenix, I was like, "these are my people!" I wanted to be a part of growing the movement.
PHX: Why did you choose to step into a leadership role with The Phoenix as a volunteer (being a Volunteer Team Leader)?
LB: I have really enjoyed the sober events I have led and attended. I so strongly believe in what the Phoenix is doing, I want to do all that I can to assist in it's success and growth.
PHX: What do you get out of your role as a leadership volunteer at The Phoenix?
LB: I learned a lot in the trainings, and I enjoyed being part of a group of amazing people with a common purpose that aligns with mine!
PHX: What is your life like outside of The Phoenix?
LB: My husband, Matson, and I became foster parents in 2015. We have four children! Three adopted children and one soon to be adopted child. Ages 5, 6, 7, and 8. We love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, roller skating, kayaking, going to the ocean, and walking our dogs. I also love competing in local CrossFit competitions and running 5k and 10k races. I ran in my first team triathlon last summer with two other athletes from Pace who biked and paddled. We plan on signing up to do it again this summer!
